True Friendship, by Stephanie
In order for you to fully understand my life lesson that I'm about to share with you, you need to know a very personal story of mine.
This year started out great and I felt like I was on the top of the world. I made some close friends during the summer and we were finally sophomores. Every Friday was pizza night at one of my best friend's house where we all sat at a table and joked around. However, I started to like this guy that I became close friends with during the summer. It turned out that he felt the same way about me, so we decided to date. Everything was going well and I even made a couple of new girlfriends. Then, one night my boyfriend and I broke up. Not only did I loose him, but I also lost my best guy friend. For the first time in my life I felt truly alone and unhappy. Throughout this whole mess it showed me people's true colors and I didn't like what I saw, but it also showed me who my true friends were.
It doesn't matter if you have 1 friend or 20, because there are only a few people in this world that can make you truely happy. For me, my family and my three best girlfriends mean everything to me. Yes, my family... it's important to tell them what's going on in your life because in the end that's all you really have. Don't get caught up in popularity because it's really not all its cracked up to be. As long as you have 1 friend that can make you laugh at yourself, then you're all set. Right now you may think that you NEED a boyfriend, but honestly, what's the rush? Make your good friends now because you'll have all of high school and the rest of your life to date, and trust me, dating doesn't get any easier, so don't rush it. To sum up my story, I've learned more than you could ever imagine this year and yes, it was tough. Some days I didn't want to come to school because I felt so disappointed in myself but I don't regret a thing. It makes you stronger as a person, and if you are able to mend the friendships like I have done, then you can do anything. As to my best guy friend, you know who you are, thank you for everything. We hit a bump in the road but I'm just thankful that you're back in my life again...
My mom always told me, "Stephanie, remember, a friend is a gift that you give yourself. A friend will make you laugh, be there for the good and the bad, and a true friend will never make fun of you. If a friend is work, then they have never been a friend at all. A friend is the biggest gift to yourself. Your parents don't choose your friends, your friends don't choose your friends... You and only you, can choose your friends. So surround yourself with people who you love and don't judge people by what's on the outside."
Everyone is going to make mistakes but please don't push them away, especially if it's someone you really care about. I know when I make a mistake I beat myself up about it. I just wish someone would have reached out a hand to help me back up on my feet like my best friends did. If someone is new or doesn't have a friend, please reach out and befriend them because that small action could mean the world to them. Now, that I'm older I understand what my mom has been trying to tell me, and to this day I know that the friends that I choose will also be the kind of friends that I would want to be surrounded by forever.
